A virus that causes monkeypox has roots in the same family as the smallpox virus.

Its rashes can be pus- or fluid-filled and can develop on the face, genitalia, mouth, hands, feet, chest, and anus.
Skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal is the main way that monkeypox spreads.
After a few weeks, monkeypox goes away on its own, but it can be fatal for those with underlying medical conditions.
